Can you find the hidden animal in the top picture? If you said it's a robin, you're right. What are robins doing in Connecticut in January??? When I was a girl, their arrival time was toward the end of March. One of the "great" April Fools jokes was to tell someone to look at the robin on the lawn and, when they looked and saw nothing there, to say "April Fools" and laugh uproariously. OK, it was pretty lame, but times were simpler then. Lately there have been robins staying later in the fall and coming back earlier in the spring - but January? with the ground totally covered in snow and ice?


There were twenty or more robins in this flock, and they were eating berries from the trees in front of the library. A couple of days ago - when the berries were coated with ice - they had quite a time. They discovered that they could knock the fruit on the ground and remove the ice more easily. Now the fruit is almost all gone, and they will probably move on. It was a treat to have them stop by on their way to....Florida? Virginia? Greenwich? We'll welcome them back in the spring!

Teddy Bear Sleepover

The Teddy Bear Sleepover has become an annual event at our library. 59 children and their bears (or other animals) came last night for stories, crafts and a movie ... Bear Snores On. The children went home, but the animals spent the night in our children's room and what fun they had! This morning their friends found them reading books, doing puzzles, swinging from signs, riding book carts, climbing on displays, playing games, and playing with toys. One little bear got into the stickers and was covered with them!

Spring Preview

Ahhhhhh...a breath of spring in our harsh winter weather!

We have had more snow today - followed by freezing rain. Trees, roads, parking lots and other surfaces are coated with ice and winter definitely has us in its grasp. But on my desk there is a reminder that spring and flowers are coming, and that winter won't be with us forever. This is a gift from Dad...what a guy!

Snow on the Roof

All of the local houses have snow on the roof!

Winter Wonderland

This was taken after one of our most recent storms. For a while we had snow every couple of days, but now we're having clear and VERY COLD weather. It's been a challenge to keep the dishwasher from freezing. In fact, we spent some time under the kitchen sink with the hair dryer recently...it worked!

To complete my series of "Dad photos," here is a recent shot of Dad posing as Nanook of the North. Although we have wonderful Marty to plow the driveway and shovel the steps and walkways, Dad still has to clear some areas with his trusty snow-blower. Here he is - creating his own private blizzard as he opens up a path to the bird feeders.
